"Katniss Everdeen, The Girl on Fire" - A Hunger Games Movie Review

So after seeing The Hunger Games three times, in theaters, in the past three weeks. I thought I should probably do a review on it. Because a movie that is see-able three times must be good!

I first heard of The Hunger Games when it was announced it would be adapted into a movie as part of a a new franchise. Me, wanting a new “Book-to-movie” franchise badly since Harry Potter was ending soon liked the idea very much.

So I waited and news came in over the months; Jennifer Lawrence(then relatively unknown) was cast as Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, Chris Hemsworth’s little brother Liam Hemsworth as Gale and several others.

I began to look toward the end of the year for two great films Sherlock Holmes and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

But on November 14th, The very first Full Length Trailer for The Hunger Games was released….and it looked AMAZING!

And from then on The Hunger Games sat at #3 on my “Top 5” anticipated films in 2012 along with The Dark Knight Rises(#1) and The Avengers(#2).

So fast forward a few months to the end of February, beginning of March. I REALLY got excited for HG! All of the buzz, trailers, TV Spots, and news articles started getting me so excited for it! And then the “tracking” buzz started coming in and they where saying that HG could open as high as “The Twilight saga: New Moon” did and that got me even more amped up!

I debated reading the book(s) leading up to the movie because I wanted to judge the film on its own merits and not just what it got right and wrong in respect to the books. In the end I did not read “The Hunger Games” mostly because I could not get a hold of the book in time! lol

I have seen The Hunger games a total of three times now. The first was at MIDNIGHT with a few of my cousins and a few friends. I then went and saw it a second time last Sunday(April 1st) with my mom, younger brother, and younger sister(who has read the book). Yesterday(Friday) I went a 3rd time(by myself) and saw it a 3rd and final time. :D

So what did I think?

NOTE: This review will have some “spoilers” in it and I will be talking about different parts of the movie. So if you have not read the book or movie and wish to not know the spoilers I suggest you read the book or see the movie before you read the review.

The Acting and Characters

First of all, I just have to talk about Jennifer Lawrence as “katniss Everdeen”. The Main character and protagonist of the book series and films. Jennifer Lawrence embodied EVERYTHING that Katniss was suppose to be PERFECTLY. From her dark brown, braided hair to her somewhat snarky yet reserved and tepid inner self. Jennifer Lawrence made this movie and made the character Katniss come to life so well. That is a hard thing to do especially for a character that is part of the written word. Jennifer Lawrence truly is KATNISS EVERDEEN.

The Rest of the cast:

Peeta Mellark - Played by Josh Hutcherson. Josh’s portrayal of Peeta IMO was spot on. At first he felt a bit “forced” and his character’s demeanor was directly opposite to katniss’. Which can be seen when the train pulls into the station and Peeta starts waving to the crowd whereas Katniss just sits there. Peeta later reveals that he thinks he has no chance at winning in the “games” and when he did it really made me understand his character better.

Primrose Everdeen - Played by Willow Shields. While Primrose was only in the first 20 minutes or so of the film, her character plays a KEY part in the story. So she was still integral to the film. I think Willow did a great job at playing Katniss’ younger sister. The thing that makes her(Primrose) really get to you is her screams. Twice she cries out to katniss, once when Katniss volunteers for Primrose and again when she and her mother say goodbye to Katniss before she is whisked off to The Capital. Both times you cringe at her screams of despair as she may be seeing her sister for the last time and you really feel for her.

Caesar Flickerman - Played by Stanley Tucci. Man is Stanley good in this film! The movie opens to Caesar talking with the “gamemaker” Seneca Crane and from that moment on you know that he is gonna be good. Caesar is the leading TV show host in The Capital and (for the movie) is a big part of helping tell the story of the “games”. There is one point in the film where Caesar interviews all of the “tributes” on his show, and the opening “theme” for his show is just plain awesome! And his smile is perfect too! The biggest thing about Caesar is that the director decided to use him as the “commentator” of the “Hunger Games” because the film could not use Katniss’ inner monologue that the book has. Using Caesar in this way worked perfectly for me.

Gale Hawthorne - Played by Liam Hemsworth. I can’t really say much about Gale because he was in the movie for all of 10 minutes. But I think Liam was a good choice for Gale and am excited to see what he can do in Catching Fire when his character becomes more involved.

Haymitch Abernathy - Played by Woody Harrelson. When I think Woody Harrelson I think of Tallahassee from Zombieland. And when I heard that he was cast as “Haymitch” in the film I wasn’t sure how he would be…I ended up being pleasantly surprised at his performance. He plays the “drunk” really well, but you can also tell he is “shrewd” and knows how to peddle katniss and Peeta to the people and sponsors. He played Haymitch with wit and great expression. And the scenes with Haymitch and Effie are completely funny.

President Snow - Played by Donald Sutherland. My understanding is that Pres. Snow is only mentioned in the first book a couple of times, but he does play a more central part in books two and three. So, for the little that Snow was in the film I thought Sutherland was another great casting choice! His cold tone toward the people of Panem really can be felt in his dialogue with seneca and his disdain for the “lesser” people as a whole. I know we will see more of him in Catching Fire and I’m looking forward to it.

Effie Trinket - Played by Elizabeth Banks. Effie is the “runner” or “host” of the “reaping” for District 12. She wears WAAY to much makeup(as the rest of the people in The Capital do) and she is very “enthusiastic” about the reaping and the games in general. But you honestly end up liking her character( at least a little bit) because she’s kinda quirky and funny. One of her best lines in the film is “..And they don’t get dessert, you do.”. Out of context it sounds a bit weird but in the movie it is pretty funny. I REALLY liked seeing Effie and Haymitch together. Their characters end up being funny together and both Woody and Elizabeth play their parts well on screen so you love to see them in the same room.

Cinna - Played by Lenny Kravitz. Again. a stellar casting choice for Cinna. I have no idea who “Lenny Kravitz” is, but I heard he is a rocker(singer). Either way he did a great job at portraying Cinna. Cinna is Kantiss’(and Peeta’s too I think) “stylist” and works with her and peeta on their “costumes” for the Parade that takes place to “present” the Tributes to the people and the sponsors. he also works with Katniss(mostly) for her dresses and her hair when she appears on Caesar Flickerman’s show. Lenny played a great Cinna, and I also loved to watch him on-screen with the others.

Seneca Crane - Played by Wes Bentley. oh Seneca’s beard is awesome! Someone joked that seneca’s beard should get an oscar for “best supporting actor” and I agree! lol His beard is pretty cool though. This was yet another casting that worked perfectly. I think we see more of Seneca in the film then he is in books. And I think that is because without the inner monologue of Katniss you need to see what is going on. They did this in the film by using Caesar(as I already have said) as well as using Seneca and the “control room”. We see Seneca directing people in the “Control room” to create things and watch where everyone is and etc. I heard that the book does not have any of that, but I think it worked well and Seneca provided at lot of “help” for the viewer to see what was going on. Seneca also spends some time with Pres. Snow and that is how we know what Snow is thinking and what he wants Seneca to do.

I am not going to go into the actors/actress’ for the other “tributes”, but I will say I liked all of them in their roles and thought they did a great job.

The Plot

The way Ross set up the story I think was done very well. For the first hour/hour, fifteen minutes we are introduced to Katniss, her situation and where she lives. After that we are then brought to the “reaping” where Primrose is then selected from the jar of names. Katniss then volunteers to be a tribute to save her sister. We are then introduced to Peeta as his name is called for the boys.

This part of the story, the very beginning could have used a bit more “development ” IMO. Of course overall it works fine. But I think there are some things from the book that where left out that could have been put into the story that would have made a couple things more clear. One of them being the “reaping” its self. If I understand(from the sources I have heard from) the people can take “assistance” from The Capital like food and things. But in result your name will be entered into the “reaping” more times. This is a simple plot point that even more shows how the people are suffering and under the control of The Capital. Now the story works fairly well without this point, but I feel it could have been even better of they revealed that to the audience. And to a point they did. when Gale is talking with Katniss she asks how many times he put his name in and he says “42” I am guessing that is inferring that he took a good amount of food from the “peacekeepers” and in exchange his name was put in more times. This is also inferred when he shows Katniss the bread that he got in exchange for a squirrel. It was inferred, but could have been state better.

Another thing I think they could have done was give a narrative monologue at the very beginning of the movie. At the beginning text comes across the screen telling us about the “treaty” that created the “Hunger Games”. I felt that if they had had Katniss give a 1-2 minute monologue on how “There where 13 Districts but they once rose up, and the 13th District was wiped out. But the other twelve where overtaken and in result of that the “Hunger Games” where created.” That would have been simple and I think twice as effective as the text on the screen. Still this does not really “hurt” the movie but it is something that I thought could have been done to make it better.

Skip forward about 20 minutes(from the reaping) and we come to the Parade. Cinna has dressed up Peeta and Katniss in these awesome looking all black suits. And they are planning on using this “fake fire” to light their suits on fire and make them stand out. Later on Katniss on known as the “Girl on fire” because of this. But when you see them “on fire” it is just a bit underwhelming. Now in the “close up” shots it looks great! But when they first enter and you see them fully it just doesn’t look…”big” enough. Their upper bodies are on fire, but I feel the they should have had both of their entire bodies covered in flame. Add a “cape”(I think it is a cape in the book) and let it flow the entire length of her body. Still I can forgive this because it still looks fairly good and looks great in the “close-ups”. They also only had a $78 Million Dollar budget, which is more than almost all of the Twilight film buegets(HG has way better SFX than any Twilight film)but it is no where near what any of the Harry potter films had. I am guessing the Production budget will go to $130 Million or so for Catching Fire, so the SFX should be a lot better then. I would also say that They did a GREAT job with the flames on Kantiss’ dress when she is on the “Caesar Flickerman Show”. She twirls her dress and flames crackle and pop on the edge of the dress and it does look awesome!

The “Shaky Cam”. This can be the biggest complaint of some people. it wasn’t really a problem for me. Obviously Ross used the shaky cam so he could get the pg-13 rating and still give the film and its violence some grittiness. I will admit that I think he over used it a little bit. When I first saw it I felt like there was a lot of shaky cam. And the part when the “games” start and we see all the killing that happens while the kids are trying to get supplies felt REALLY shaky. But when I saw the film a 2nd time, when I saw that scene again I was able to follow it better than the 1st time I found it easy to watch. If I was Ross I would have used the shaky cam ONLY during the “Games” to give the games themselves a very different feel then the rest of the world.

Katniss and Peeta. Are they in love? Does Katniss truly love Peeta? Is it a lie? All questions that most people wonder. And I think the film did a fairly good job at it. As I understand(from what I have been told) Kantiss uses Peeta as a way to get through the “games” and uses the “Star-crossed lovers from Distrcit 12” idea that Haymitch brought up to help get sponsors for the games. In the film we see Petta admit on TV that he has a crush on Katniss. To which Katniss gets mad at him for. They make amends and they then enter the games. Kanitss ends up on her own. But Peeta forms an alliance with some of the other tributes with the promise that he can lead them to her. I don’t think that Peeta ever really wanted to kill Kantiss, but I think he formed the alliance to bide his time in the game. Katniss becomes and ally to Rue, a 12yr old girl from District 11. Rue ends up dying by the hand of another tribute. Kantiss takes the time to give here a proper death by placing flowers all around her and making her look “proper”. In reaction to this the 11th district riots and that gets Seneca pretty mad. He is about to kill off Kantiss when Haymitch tells him he should use the “young love” element of Katniss and Peeta as a tool for the people(s) of the Districts to root for. So Seneca changes the rules of the game so that two tributes can win as long as they are from the same district. As soon as Katniss hears this she goes looking for Peeta. Now that tips me off right then and there that she isn’t going to find him just because she “loves” him, she needs him to win. And she continues to milk that with the “cave” scene. But I do think that Kantiss did start to “like” peeta while in the cave. fast forward a bit and we come to the end of the games. Peeta and Kantiss are the only ones alive. Then the previous rule allowing two tributes if from the same District to live was reversed. Now Katniss and Peeta had to make a decision…who dies? Katniss tells Peeta to take some berries(they where poisonous, but I don’t remember their name) so that both of them would die and The Capital would have no victor. Just as they are about to take the berries they are told to stop and are pronounced the winners. The Capital is pretty pissed because Katniss showed them up. And then there was a scene that I missed that 1st and 2nd time seeing the film, but caught the 3rd. Just before katniss and Peeta are to go on to Caesar’s show after winning the “games”, Haymitch ”preps” Katiss tells her to say she was in love with Peeta and stuff on the show. This further enforces the idea the Katniss was using Peeta as a means to get through the games. Then there are these lines,

PEETA: “So, what happens when we get back?”

KATNISS: “I don’t know… I guess we try to forget.”

PEETA: “..I don’t want to forget.”

This further shows that while Peeta thinks katniss loves him, Katniss doesn’t really and wants to forget…because it was all an act.

The thing is, I got all of this after three viewings. I feel as if they could have done better with that aspect of the story and they didn’t.

The “Muttations”. I heard that in the book they are the fallen tributes. They are brought back to life and that it what ends up chasing Katinss and Peeta near the end of the games. The difference in the movie is that instead of that they show the “Control room” releasing these huge “dog” like creatures on them. Someone made a point that they didn’t buy that because they didn’t believe that the “control room” could “make” such organic life on the spot. which does make a bit of sense. I was just thinking if they had done it the same way in the movie as in the books it would have been easier to explain. Plus the fallen tributes being Resurrected and chasing after Katniss and Peeta sounds pretty freaking awesome and scary!

One last thing. The “salute” that the people give give during the reaping and Kantiss(and the people of District 11) gives while in the games…it is never explained to the viewer. I have a feeling it has something to do with the past and is important, But I wish they would have told us what it meant. I know it means something, but without knowing what it means it takes away some of the meaning when they give it to Katniss after she “makes up” Rue.

Overall Score for Plot use and execution: 4/5

The ACTION

For the most part I thought Ross did a great job a filming the action sequences while still being able to get a PG-13 rating. The “forest fire” sequence is LOUD and filmed well as well as the scene with the “muttations”. The Tracker Jacker scene was one of the most intense IMO and that was also filmed very well. Ross used a lot of Shaky Cam to deal with the violence. And as I have said I didn’t have problem with it, but I know some have.

Overall Score for action sequences and filming: 4.5/5

The Script and Dialogue

The Hunger Games has, In my Opinion some the best dialogue I have heard in a good while. There are PLENTY of Memorable quotes and lines of dialogue. Some of the best come from Haymitch, Snow, Caesar, and Katniss herself.

Here are a few of my favorites:

“Katniss Everdeen, The girl on FIRE!” - Caesar Flcikerman

“Hope. It is the only thing that can overcome fear. a little hope is effective. a lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, as long as it is contained.” - President Snow

“I just wish there was a way that I could show them that they don’t own me. If I’m gonna die, I still want to be me.” - Peeta Mellark

“And may the odds be ever in your favor.”

And there are many others. Point is, this film has great crisp dialogue and a wonderfully crafted script that works REALLY WELL.

The Musical Score

Simply an awesome score!

Ross actually didn’t use the score the whole time…but when he did is WORKED! The score was done by James Newton Howard. Who has scored such greats as The Sixth Sense, The Village, Hidalgo, and lots of others.

There are some musical scores that to me are GREAT in the movie. But when they are “out of context” they don’t always sound quite as good. There are a few HG score tracks that are awesome to listen to, but overall they sound twice as good “in context” of the film.

OVERALL

Overall I LOVED this film! There are a few places it could have been better, which is mostly in the “plot” section. But in the end I enjoyed the heck out of this film and am proud to say I went and saw it three times. I am GREATLY anticipating Catching Fire which comes out NOVEMBER 22ND 2013!!!
